BAKUCHIOL: RETINOL REPLACEMENT
In 1966, Mehta et al. discovered a natural, vegan compound called Bakuchiol in Psoralea corylifolia seeds, named after the plant’s Sanskrit name, Bakuchi. Predominantly sourced from these seeds, which are significant in Ayurveda and Chinese traditional medicine, Bakuchiol is rich in coumarins like psoralen, historically used in Indian and Chinese medicinal practices. As a meroterpene belonging to the terpenophenol class, Bakuchiol mirrors the skin rejuvenating properties of retinol, effectively combating skin ageing and acne.
However, unlike retinol, Bakuchiol avoids the common side effects associated with retinoid use, such as UV sensitivity, skin peeling, epidermis thinning, redness, inflammation, cutaneous erythema, pruritus, and stinging or burning sensations. It works similarly to retinoids by targeting cellular pathways, including the modulation of retinoic acid receptor genes and upregulating collagen and extracellular matrix synthesis enzymes. This leads to a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles while improving skin firmness and elasticity.
